8/29/12 The Smashing of the Basketball Goal Matthew Cherry
It was five weeks before the youth group trip to Kansas City, and we had to come up with a way to raise funds. So we decided to have a yard sale. We started to collect valuable junk. We got to one week away, and did not have enough stuff. So we made a few phone calls, and made agreements with some families to allow us to come pick up their junk. Then we decided to have some carnival games so that we can make money, and people could win prizes.
We decided to take a basketball goal and a few horse troughs’ for shooting and water-throwing games. No one really though it to amazing, but I thought it was a great idea, and the plan was going great.
The day before, we planned to meet and get everything together and ready. I loaded the troughs’ and the goal safely into the back of the truck. I was a little frustrated that I had only a small amount of help loading the stuff into the truck.
Once we were all squeezed into the truck, dad said, ”I need to stop at the office and pick up some papers”. so we did. Now at his office, there is an over-hang to protect the cars from the rain and wind. And dad tried to go under it, as he usually does. He had forgotten about the basketball goal on top of the truck, and he accidentally smashed it under the cover! I was upset and shocked that he had forgotten it was up there. And I was very disappointed that we could not play the game at the yard sale.
Since then, I have been very careful to remind people of what can become a hazard/problem, and help them as much as I can to prevent it. The yard sale was still fun, and we did very well.
